Southwestern Block & Annex

This restoration and adaptive reuse connects two formerly separate, turn-of-the-last-century buildings to create eight spacious one-bedroom apartments on the second level while restoring storefronts, windows, pressed metal ceilings and wood floors for retail shops on the street level. The brick has been cleaned, wood and pressed metal details repainted and awnings added. The project was phased due to limited funding, and much of the work was done by building owners in the evenings and on weekends. The buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Downtown Commercial District established in 1994 and all work has been performed in compliance with the certification requirements of the Department of the Interior. Koch Hazard Architects' restoration of the Southwestern Block and Annex is a Mayor's Award for Historic Preservation winner and an AIA South Dakota Merit Award winner.
